Scientists have determined that some bacteria selflessly commit suicide for the greater good of their species. The benevolent (well, to other bacteria, at any rate) trait seems to be passed on genetically.
Samonella, for instance, will inflame the inside of the stomach and kill off the microflora — and in the process, their fellow bacteria. But for Salmonella typhimurium who are genetically inclined to assist their brethren-in-infection, it’s no big deal, they’re happy to die.
That’s right — they’ve finally found a an emo bacterium.
